What is 4-Fluoro-N-isopropylaniline?
4-Fluoro-N-isopropylaniline — FIA — is a pale yellow to amber liquid combining a para-fluorinated ring with a secondary amine carrying an isopropyl group on the nitrogen. It is normally made by reductive amination of 4-fluoroaniline with acetone.
Both features earn their place. The fluorine blocks metabolic oxidation at that ring position and raises lipophilicity, while N-alkylation removes one N–H and adds steric bulk, changing how the nitrogen behaves in acylation and cyclisation compared with a plain primary aniline.

Handling precautions
FIA is harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled, and causes skin and eye irritation. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.
Aromatic amines are absorbed through intact skin and can affect the blood by forming methaemoglobin. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, and eye protection are required.
Use local exhaust ventilation for drum decanting, charging, and heated operations, and avoid breathing vapour or mist.
Reaction with acid chlorides, isocyanates, and chloroformates is exothermic and requires controlled addition and cooling at scale.

What is 4-Fluoro-N-isopropylaniline used for?

How is FIA manufactured?
Most commonly by reductive amination: 4-fluoroaniline is condensed with acetone and the resulting imine is reduced. Residual 4-fluoroaniline from incomplete conversion is the impurity most worth watching.
Why does residual 4-fluoroaniline matter?
The primary amine is more nucleophilic than the secondary one, so it reacts first and faster in acylation. Even a small amount produces a distinct by-product that then has to be separated, which is why it is specified rather than left as an unquantified impurity.
How does a secondary amine differ from a primary aniline in practice?
It has only one N–H, so it forms tertiary amides rather than secondary ones, cannot be diazotised, and is more sterically hindered. That changes both the products it forms and the conditions needed to form them.
Why does the product darken during storage?
Secondary aromatic amines oxidise readily on contact with air and light. Darkening is normal and does not necessarily mean the assay has dropped, but nitrogen blanketing and cool, dark storage slow it considerably.
What storage conditions do you recommend?
Sealed containers under nitrogen, kept cool and out of light. Refrigerated storage is worthwhile for material that will be held for several months or used in colour-sensitive work.
Is it soluble in water?
Only slightly. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ethers, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons, so reactions are run in organic media.
What purity do you supply?
Standard grade is supplied at a minimum GC assay of 98% with residual 4-fluoroaniline at or below 0.5% and water at or below 0.3%. Higher assay and tighter colour specifications can be manufactured to order.
