Why is the aniline acetylated rather than left free?
A free aromatic amine is nucleophilic enough to interfere in subsequent steps and can poison metal catalysts. Acetylation masks it, moderates the ring's reactivity, and directs where further substitution takes place. The acetyl group is removed later by hydrolysis.
Why bromine rather than chlorine on this position?
The carbon–bromine bond undergoes oxidative addition to palladium far more readily than carbon–chlorine, so it couples under milder conditions and with a wider range of catalysts. Cost is the trade-off.
