What is 2,5-Dichloroaniline?

2,5-Dichloroaniline, abbreviated 25DCA, is a white to beige crystalline solid carrying chlorine atoms in the ortho and para-adjacent positions of an aniline ring. It is produced by the reduction of 2,5-dichloronitrobenzene.

The ortho chlorine sits directly beside the amino group, which restricts rotation and influences how the molecule packs after diazotisation and coupling. That geometry is what gives pigments built on 25DCA their characteristic shade strength and heat stability.

Handling precautions

25DCA is toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.

Chlorinated anilines can be absorbed through intact skin and may affect the blood by forming methaemoglobin. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, eye protection, and respiratory protection are required.

Because the melting point is low, warm-weather storage and transport can produce partially molten material — check drums and bags before opening and avoid skin contact with the liquid phase.

Contain all spills and dispose of waste through licensed chemical waste routes; the product is very toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects.

What is 2,5-Dichloroaniline used for?

It is an intermediate used mainly as a diazo component in azo pigment and dye manufacture, and as a building block for agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates. It is not used as a finished product.

How does 2,5-DCA differ from 3,4-DCA?

Both have the formula C6H5Cl2N and a molecular weight of 162.02, but the chlorine positions differ. 2,5-DCA melts around 50°C and dominates pigment and dye chemistry; 3,4-DCA melts around 71°C and is used mainly for herbicides. Substituting one for the other changes the downstream product entirely.

Why does the ortho chlorine matter in pigment chemistry?

A chlorine directly next to the amino group hinders rotation and changes how the finished pigment molecules stack in the crystal lattice. That packing controls shade, tinting strength, and heat stability, which is why pigment makers specify the isomer precisely.

Is it soluble in water?

Only slightly. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ether, acetone, and aromatic solvents. For diazotisation it is normally dissolved in acid before treatment with sodium nitrite.

Why does the product cake or clump in the bag?

Its melting point is only 47–50°C, so flakes can soften and fuse during warm-weather storage or transport. Keeping the store below 30°C and on pallets away from direct sun prevents most caking.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99% with isomer content at or below 0.5% and moisture at or below 0.3%. Tighter specifications can be manufactured to order.

What packaging sizes are available?

How long can it be stored?

24 months from date of manufacture in sealed original packaging under the recommended conditions. Some surface discolouration may develop over time without affecting assay.
