What is Para Chloro Aniline?

Para Chloro Aniline — PCA, or 4-chloroaniline — is a white to pale beige crystalline solid with a chlorine atom directly opposite the amino group. It is produced by reducing para nitrochlorobenzene.

The para chlorine withdraws electron density without blocking the amino group sterically, which makes PCA an unusually well-behaved diazo component: it couples predictably and gives colours with good fastness. That reliability is why it appears across so much of the azo dye and pigment portfolio.

Storage and guidelines

Handling precautions

PCA is toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption, and is classified as a suspected carcinogen. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.

Chloroanilines are readily absorbed through intact skin and cause methaemoglobin formation, which reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, eye protection, and respiratory protection are required.

Control dust during bag emptying and charging, and use local exhaust ventilation at all transfer and melting points.

The product is very toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects. Contain all spills and dispose of waste through licensed chemical waste routes.

What is Para Chloro Aniline used for?

It is an intermediate for azo dyes and pigments, agrochemical actives, pharmaceutical building blocks including antiseptic chemistry, and rubber chemicals. It is not used as a finished product.

How is PCA manufactured?

By reducing para nitrochlorobenzene, usually by catalytic hydrogenation. The isomer purity of the PNCB feed carries through directly, which is why both products are specified on isomer content.

What is the difference between PCA and the ortho isomer?

Both are C6H6ClN, but placing the chlorine para rather than ortho to the amino group changes basicity, coupling behaviour, and the geometry of the finished dye or active. The two are not interchangeable.

Why does the flake turn grey, pink, or brown?

Chloroanilines oxidise slowly in air and light, generating coloured surface impurities. Assay is usually unaffected, but sealed, cool, dark storage preserves appearance for colour-sensitive applications.

Is PCA soluble in water?

Only slightly in neutral water. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ether, and dilute mineral acid, and acid dissolution is the normal first step before diazotisation.

Can it be supplied molten?

Yes, for bulk users. With a melting point around 71°C, molten supply in heated tankers avoids dust exposure and handling losses, but requires dedicated heated lines at the receiving site.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99.5% with isomer content at or below 0.3% and moisture at or below 0.3%. Tighter specifications can be produced to order.

What packaging sizes are available?

25 kg bags, 500 kg jumbo bags, and molten product in heated tankers. Samples are available for shade and coupling trials.

Is PCA hazardous?

Yes, and notably so. It is acutely toxic by several routes, readily absorbed through skin, classified as a suspected carcinogen, and very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Full engineering controls and PPE are required.

Why is skin absorption emphasised for this product?

Chloroanilines pass through intact skin efficiently, so a splash that is not immediately washed off can produce a systemic dose without any inhalation exposure. Glove selection, breakthrough time, and prompt decontamination matter more here than for many solids.
