What is 2,4-Dichloroaniline?
2,4-Dichloroaniline — 24DCA — is a white to light brown crystalline solid carrying chlorine atoms ortho and para to the amino group. It is produced by reducing 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene.
With both chlorines positioned on the activating pattern of the ring, the amine is less basic than aniline but still couples reliably after diazotisation. The ortho chlorine adds enough steric influence to shift shade and improve fastness in the resulting colours.

How does 24DCA compare with the 2,5-, 2,6-, and 3,4- isomers?
All four share the formula C6H5Cl2N and a molecular weight of 162.02, and differ only in chlorine placement. That placement decides melting point, basicity, coupling behaviour, and which downstream products are accessible, so the isomers are not interchangeable.
How is it manufactured?
By reducing 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene, usually by catalytic hydrogenation. Isomer purity of the nitro feed carries through directly into the finished amine.
Is it soluble in water?
Only slightly in neutral water. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ether, and dilute mineral acid, and acid dissolution is the usual first step before diazotisation.
Why does the flake darken in storage?
Chlorinated anilines oxidise slowly in air and light, generating coloured surface impurities. Assay is generally unaffected, but sealed, cool, dark storage preserves appearance for colour-sensitive work.
Can it be supplied molten?
Yes, for bulk users. With a melting point around 62°C, molten supply in heated tankers avoids dust exposure and handling losses, but requires dedicated heated lines at the receiving site.
